Everything you need to know about micropigmentation

What is micropigmentation?

Micropigmentation, or permanent makeup (PMU) is a cosmetic procedure that improves or replaces lost colouring on your skin. It is also known as cosmetic tattooing or semi-permanent makeup. Micropigmentation is most frequently used on the face – to enhance eyebrows, eyelashes (eyeliner), and lips. It is also used to camouflage scars, even skin tone and restore colour.

This revolutionary method is achieved by depositing hypoallergenic mineral pigments into the dermal layer of the skin by using an ultra-thin needle. Therefore the shape of brows, eyes or lips is enhanced. Compared to body art tattoos, the pigments used for PMU aren't introduced as deeply into the skin and have a different composition. Whether you are looking for a natural and soft look or a more defined intense look, this can easily be achieved with micropigmentation. It's a misconception that natural results can only be achieved with microblading.

Why permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup is a fantastic option for people looking for an enhancement and who don't have time to apply a full face of makeup every morning or for those who suffer from hair loss. It's ideal for anyone who wants to simplify their beauty routine by spending less time in front of the mirror or who lead an active lifestyle without worrying about their makeup coming off. Cosmetic tattooing is also the perfect solution for people who have a loss of motor skills due to ageing or medical conditions or loss of vision.

What happens during the initial consultation?

When you come in for a consult, we discuss your goals and what you want to achieve. Feel free to bring in photos, social media posts or any other inspiration to help guide us. We let you know what to expect and advise different possible outcomes depending on your skin type and desired look. We listen and make sure you leave our studio completely satisfied.

What should I do beforehand to prepare for the procedure?

Before the procedure, we send our clients post-care instructions and information on what to expect. These include:

  • No blood thinners 72 hours prior (e.g. aspirin)

  • No facials for 2 weeks before or after

  • No alcohol or caffeine the night before or day of

  • No brow waxing 2 weeks before

  • No chemical peels, microdermabrasion, mesotherapy, or any other intense treatments which could cause skin irritation 3-4 weeks prior

With lips, stimulation from the needle during the procedure can bring out blisters or a cold sore. This can happen to anyone and is not a sign of incorrect treatment. You can take preventive antiviral medication to help.

What should I expect after my procedure? What is my aftercare protocol?

Right after the procedure, the area will appear brighter or darker than the final healed result; this is entirely normal. The day after the procedure, the colour will appear even darker as it begins healing. Some swelling or redness may occur depending on each client; however, this will reduce after a few hours or days.

Brows: Wash brows with a gentle cleanser twice a day, tap dry, and apply a thin layer of Aquaphor or Bepanthol. For the next four weeks after the procedure, it's best not to use creams that contain acids or ingredients that will lighten or exfoliate the skin.

Lips: Sometimes, the lips can bruise even after the procedure; the bruising will disappear within a couple of hours. Don't let the lips dry out; keep applying Aquaphor as needed. The area should be kept free of makeup, direct sun exposure for two weeks and avoid sweaty exercise for at least a week. Following the initial procedure, the colour will fade, and the final result will appear after about 30 days.

The most frequently asked question (!), does it hurt?

The good news is that it's not as painful as getting a body art tattoo. While you can feel some pressure or uncomfortable at times, we use two different numbing creams throughout the procedure to minimise discomfort. But keep your own personal pain tolerance in mind and at what stage you are in your menstrual cycle. Everyone is different when it comes to sensitivity.

How long is the healing process?

For the first two weeks, we ask you to be very careful with the area, meaning no moisture, friction, makeup or direct sun exposure of any kind. You will experience some scabbing around the fifth day after the procedure but DO NOT scratch, pick or peel off any skin, as this will pull out the pigment. Once the scabbing has finished, you can apply any makeup to the area and wash your face normally. Then, about 30 days after the procedure, we require you to come back for a touch up to perfect the final result.

How long does it last?

Semi-permanent makeup can last anywhere from 1-3 years, but this depends on your skin type, lifestyle and maintenance. We recommend our clients to come back for a yearly colour boost to keep the area looking good as new.

Is permanent makeup for me?

Are you tired of constantly drawing or filling in your brows and are looking for a more permanent solution? Then micropigmentation is for you. If you have suffered from some hair loss or are looking for an effortlessly natural look, you are a good candidate for semi-permanent makeup. Cosmetic tattooing is also great for people who are always on the go, active, or who wish to spend less time in front of the mirror. The results can range from subtle and natural to bold and beautiful, depending on each client's style and preferences.

What are your safety practices?

Our studio only uses high-quality, 100% disposable and hypoallergenic tools to ensure client safety. We have certified with a Health Hygiene Course in Blood Borne Pathogens. We use KWADRON needles that are 100% disposable, and each needle is properly disposed of in a sharps container and never reused.
